History
How a large institution developed from a makeshift solution ...
- Blessed Gérard's Children's Home was started on 15 May 2000 by assigning a part of the building of Blessed Gérard's Care Centre and Hospice to the then new project and two care-givers were employed full-time. In these preliminary premises we could only accommodate ten children and we were soon full. We wanted to help more of these vulnerable children. Therefore, we had to build a larger building in order to provide them with a proper home. Blessed Gérard's Children's Home was officially opened by the Grand Hospitaller of the Order of Malta on 9 July 2000.
- First wing
In 2002 we built a new building for Blessed Gérard's Children's Home, which was solemnly opened on 15 December 2002 by the Grand Commander of the Order of Malta. - Extensions 1 and 2
In the years 2007 and 2008, the children’s home was significantly expanded and blessed by the then new Bishop of Eshowe Xolelo Kumalo on 22 June 2008. - Extension 3
In the years 2012 and 2013 the children's home was again extended by the modification of a building tract, previously used as a hall, and the establishment of a soccer field next to the Care Centre.
The Bishop of Eshowe Xolelo Kumalo blessed it on 12 October 2013.
