The Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard brings care, protection and practical help to people in Mandeni and surrounding communities in KwaZulu-Natal, including Sundumbili, Isithebe, Nyoni, Mangethe and Hlomendlini, while also welcoming patients from farther afield. Founded in 1992, we are a Catholic association and the relief organisation of the Order of Malta in South Africa. Through Blessed Gérard’s Care Centre, we respond to needs identified in our community.

When families face illness, hunger or sudden hardship, our professional staff and volunteers work alongside them with respect and compassion.
Our name recalls Blessed Gérard, whose care for sick pilgrims in Jerusalem gave rise to the Order of St John, now known as the Order of Malta. His example continues to guide our service today.

About Father Gérard
Father Gérard T. Lagleder O.S.B.
- was born, raised and ordained a priest in Regensburg, Germany.
- is a Missionary Benedictine of St. Ottilien Archabbey.
- has been a missionary in Zululand, South Africa, since 1987.
- founded the Brotherhood of Blessed Gérard in 1992.
- is a Conventual Chaplain ad honorem of the Order of Malta.
