Volunteer Iona Hughan spent several weeks at Blessed Gérard’s Children’s Home in 2011. In her newsletter account, she describes school journeys, games, shared meals and dependable carers. She especially remembered a child’s thank-you card addressing her as “Mum”. She also saw older children take responsibility and support younger ones.

Iona found a community where children from different backgrounds lived together and cared for one another. Her account shows the value of safety, affection and education in a child’s life. To respect their privacy, the children in this account are not named here.
