Several families wrote to Blessed Gérard’s Hospice in September 2008 about the help they had received. Jennet recalled how the ambulance collected her seriously ill sister Martha from home and how the hospice team cared for her. Martha died there, and her family thanked the team for staying with her.

Jane thanked the team for advice on caring for her mother at home and for support after her death. Other relatives expressed gratitude for the care given to Ntombizini and to Biyela, who had nowhere to stay after leaving hospital. Their letters show how practical care and human kindness worked together.

The photographs on the newsletter page show other people in similar care situations; they do not depict the people named in the letters.
