In newsletter no. 36 from 2017, three women describe their time at Blessed Gérard’s Care Centre.
Nelisiwe Mhlongo had previously counselled other people. When she needed help herself, she found support at the care centre. Her family stood by her. Speaking to the newsletter editor, she encouraged others to talk openly about living with HIV and to seek help.
Joan Allen could not return to her previous living situation without support after a hospital stay. Another patient told her about the care centre. Joan was grateful to stay there while looking for suitable longer-term care.
Zama Cele described how much the nurses’ kindness meant to her. They made time for conversations and questions. Their attention helped her feel welcome at the care centre.
Their accounts show that good care also means listening, companionship and help finding a way forward.
