Sicelo met Maresi Rehder in the hospice. He was 26, had two children and had lost his job and much of his strength during illness. In the hospice he received nursing care and joined the treatment programme. Shortly before his discharge, he agreed to be photographed: he looked forward to going home, returning to work and watching his children grow up.
Busisiwe lived with her husband in a remote settlement. Limited mobility and rough terrain made it almost impossible for her to reach medical help. The home care team visited her regularly, supplied her medication and arranged transport to a doctor or hospital when needed.
These two encounters show why inpatient care and home visits belong together: support must also reach people who cannot travel to the Care Centre themselves.
