In newsletter no. 34 (2015), Zinhle Zulu describes her volunteer work at Blessed Gérard’s Care Centre. Trained as a care assistant but unable to find permanent employment, she found an opportunity there to care for others and continue learning in her profession.

She particularly enjoyed helping patients with movement exercises. She said that conversation, singing and laughter gave people courage and eased their fears. Volunteering also gave her own days a meaningful purpose.

The author, Maresi Rehder, expressly records in the newsletter that Zinhle consented to the publication of her account and photograph. The displayed date is the newsletter’s publication date, not the exact day of the interview.
